May Day Traditions

Do you remember making May baskets as a kid? I do. I usually used the flowers my mother didn't want cut. LOL. Then we used to run up and try to ring doorbells and leave them without getting caught.

I was curious how all that got started and found that it dates back to Druids. On May 1st they celebrated the Festival of Beltane. When the Romans occupied the British Isles they brought wth them their Festival of Flora. This is five day festival sarting April 28th and ending May 2nd. These combined traditions make up many of our modern festivals. You can find out more at http://www.theholidayspot.com/mayday/history.htm

I was amazed how many cultures had May Day celebrations and traditions. Is there any special way your family celebrates May Day? Or funny May Day stories?

Have a great day!!!
